![]() ![]() And it's pretty fun - it's the pinnacle of Vogel's RPG craft. And so only in parts 5 and 6 it got deep enough to be fun. Otherwise, it's pretty good.Īnother thing is that, for the majority of the series (original part 1-IV), the combat was rather bad - just not enough abilities to make it good. The ending kinda sucks because the game is somewhat overstretched - it's like a movie that just cannot end and tries to climax over and over again. Just different parts trying to manage it in different fashions and with different outcomes. So, while the world itself is rather bland, it still reacts to said famine in a very curious ways. It's cool because, despite famine being pretty common thoughout the history, it's not a theme that RPGs explore often. The game won't be as interesting if you wish to play as purely good character, though.Ħ introduces the famine into the game's world and all the accompanying crime and chaos. He also tends to write his characters as utter jackasses (because he's one himself) and so the best part of the game is optional ability to join the actually evil empire forces and make all those bastards pay. Well, that's how Vogel's NPCs usually behave but here it actually makes sense. Only the local denizens don't really care about that so you wade through nothing but presumption, arrogance and constant attempts to exploit you. Compared to Geneforge's industrial fantasy setting, political squabbles and yojimbo-style backstabbing, parts 1-4 (remakes included) are incredibly boring.ĥ changes that formula by offering you the role of the soldier of that evil (now - kinda reformed) empire. And, while you're killing lots of epic demons & dragons & stuff, not a lot of actually interesting stuff happens. Silly dumb things like catmen (who purr) and lizardmen (who hiss) and talking spiders (who chirp) and little grey men ( who produce no distinct sounds and thus look out of the setting). Goody-good rebels who can do no wrong vs the evil and racist empir. The setting is just too bland and and corny. Avernum 5 and 6 are the best as they actually manage to do something interesting with the setting. ![]()
